Narrative Film

In preparation for Freestyle’s Mid Year Exhibition, I worked over the course of four months to produce media projects in Film, English, and Digital Media.

For my media elective class, I produced a short film titled “The Move” about two kids that attempt to ruin their mother’s Open House to prevent having to move, and ultimately learn to accept the change and come together as a family. The creation of this film spanned over roughly a four month period, from brainstorming the initial concept, drafting and revising the screenplay, to planning, shooting, and editing the film.

An early draft of our screenplay that we presented to the class in table reads shows the amount of revising we needed to create a good story that made sense. Our original screenplay was in fact not about a family moving, but rather about the CEO of a business embroiled in scandal who takes a candidate for mayoral office under his wing in the hopes of saving his company. Unfortunately, the characters had no clear or reasonable motivations, their dialogue made no sense, and the ending was anticlimactic and uninteresting.

My partner and I spent several days workshopping how to improve the plot of our film, and we ended up settling on a idea drastically different than our original story.

Once we felt happy with our script, we started the pre-production process. This included lining our script and making a shot list. We also had to finalize cast, crew, locations, and props.
