Explorations

Introduction:

The Explorations Project was an assignment in which students were challenged to explore a topic they are passionate about or are interested in, while improving upon a particular skill set that addresses 21st Century Skills.

For my project, I chose to learn more about interior design. I chose this particular topic because I have always had a passion for interior design, and may want a future career in this area. I am improving upon the 21st Century skill of “Creativity- the act of bringing something into existence that is genuinely new, original, and of value either personally (of significance only to the individual or organization) or culturally (adds significantly to a domain of culture as recognized by experts).”

Process:

First, I decided to explore Color Theory and the emotions that certain colors create. Then, I chose two types of rooms that I would design, a teen bedroom, and a baby girl’s nursery. With these demographics in mind, I chose colors for the room that would best suit the individual based on color theory. For the teen bedroom, I chose to use blues as the color scheme because teenage years can be stressful and emotional, and blues radiate calmness, relaxation, spirit, determination, and ambition. For the nursery, I didn’t just chose a light pink color scheme because it is common for baby girls. I chose it because the color of pink expresses the feeling of innocence, love, care, possibilities, and calmness, all in which are common emotions around a new child in a family.

Final Production:

My final products were two sketched out rooms, one filled in with color, and the other with a color scheme. I have a poster board that displays paint swatches for both rooms and the sketches of each. It also includes tips and tricks for interior designers, as well as examples of different styles of interior design.

Reflection:

After completing this project, I value the fact that I got to chose my topic and learn more about what I am interested in.
