HUMOR PROJECT

Humor Proposal: Here, I pitched the humor project and made an analysis about two ‘professional humorists’

Analysis:

The two professional humorists, or ‘comedians’ as I call them are the sketch comedy duo BriTaNick and the Whitest Kids U Know. Both are pre written sketch comedy groups, but approach the subject in very different manners. To start, BriTaNick is a comedy duo, staring two lads, Brian and Nick. They don’t upload much anymore, but they originated on Youtube, posting small comedic shorts. BriTaNick started out as two college boys, so they had a lot of Black and Blue Humor in their early videos. For example, they had a dad confronting his son who had a black eye from school. The son was reluctant at first, but it is revealed that the father was the one who came to school and hit the son. And although their humor was sprinkled with these comedic forms, they had their main breakthrough in their banter and their absurdist humor. Brian and Nick banter off of each other incredibly well. One usually plays a straight man well the other one usually is the crazy one. For example, one of their sketches has two friends attempting to hang out, but every time the ‘normal’ one says something that could lead into an innuendo or blue humor joke, the ‘absurd’ one takes off his pants and makes a dick joke. The duo works off of each other extremely well, with the banter itself being incredibly smart. The other group I looked at was a comedy troupe known as the Whitest Kids U Know (WKUK). The WKUK are a sketch comedy type of group, with 5 members. Each member has a slightly different personality, and they play similar character archetypes in their skits. They originated as live stand up performers, but they moved on to doing sketch comedy on television. They utilize black humor, blunders, caricatures, and irony in their sketches. Their sketches are very much more live action, and could easily be performed live. When I am comparing BriTaNick and the WKUK, I find that they are similar in what subjects they approach, but are very different in how they approach these subjects. BriTaNick are funnier in my opinion, but their quick banter, unique ideas and pacing require post production. While the WKUK have a bit more of a cohesive story, that could really be performed anywhere by anyone, but they perform it the best. However, because of their broad story’s, the WKUK aren’t as much of comedy personalities as BriTaNick, and well you could watch a WKUK skit without having the WKUK actors in it, you couldn’t have a BriTaNick skit without Brian or Nick.

Personally, I find that the quick witted banter and absurdist ideas of the characters of Brian and Nick are what I draw away from BriTaNick, where I find the actual sketches of the WKUK are more entertaining and cohesive ideas. I want to draw away from BriTaNick, the humor and personality of the character, by making my own personality entertaining, while writing a simple and cohesive story that could be performed live, like the WKUK. These inspire me, because I think I’m funnier live, and it’s hard to pinpoint why.

Description:

My humor project is a live action skit with my partner Ben Shell. In this skit, we are utilizing meta humor, by describing the ‘making’ of a humor skit. My partner and I are utilizing overacting, banter, and irony in our script. It is a back and forth where I play a person dead inside and devoid of humor, while my partner plays a person full of humor and energy. We try to play off each other.

Humor Project Script: Here is the script my partner and I wrote together.

Owen is sitting idly at a desk playing Tetris on an English laptop and the project is showing him playing Tetris. Ben quickly rushes in, bumbling from enthusiasm. Owen sighs in disgust as he sees Ben approaching

Ben: Yo, Kyle, I’ve decided to work on the humor project with you!

Owen looks slowly up at Ben.

Owen: Ok.

Ben sits down at the table.

Ben: Ok, Ok, Ok, I’m pretty sure we have time to work on it, so lets, uh, let’s plan it yeah! What do you think about a duo stand up routine?

Owen: Sure I think that’s fi–

Ben(Interrupting): No, No, no No, wait wait, what if we did a comedy song, like a musical number?!

Owen: Yeah, I guess that cou–

Ben(Interrupting): Nah that’s stupid, you can’t sing. Uhhh what about a short comedy skit?!

Owen: (sarcastically, in a low voice)  Huhuh Look at me I’m Ben Shell

Ben: Nononononononono I GOT  IT, A FULL-LENGTH FEATURE COMEDY FILM!!!

Ben is clearing very excited

Owen: Ehhhhhh—

Ben: That’s what we’re doing!!!! Write this down!!!

Owen: Ok…

Owen starts making fun (trash talking) Ben on the Doc for the audience to see

Ben: Alright Alright, when will you be available for scripting and filming and all that stuff?

Owen: I’m available anytime really.

Ben: Awesome! How about next Thursday?

Owen: Nah. I’m not available then.

Ben: But you said you were–

Owen: (At the top of his lungs) NOOOOO. I AM NOT  AVAILABLE THEN BENJAMIN!!!

They stare at each other blankly for a moment.

Ben: Ok… (turns back to positive) Well since we’re here, let’s make some jokes. Ughhhh what’s Mr. Flo’s favorite drink? CHAI (Cha*eye)  TEA

Ben immediately starts yucking it up, laughing almost uncontrollably. It is a really bad joke but Ben still think it’s hilarious. After Ben’s laughter begins to die down, Owen follows up with a very pathetic/unnerving laugh.

Ben: (Laughing) Ok, Uhhh. I got another one. So Mr. Greco’s favorite poems are Haiku’s right. Haiku? MORE LIKE HAIPOO

Mr. Greco: HEY!

Mr. Greco stands up in the audience.

Mr. Greco: Hey, Guys, can you wrap it up. This is getting a bit out of hand.

Ben: What? We were just–

Mr. Greco cuts off Ben

Greco: Quite frankly guys, this… this isn’t very funny, I mean seriously like, I know you were trying really hard, but this whole sketch is just a big Joke. (emphasizes it, so that people realize that he is part of the skit. HEYOH)
