Introduction

The Documentary Project incuded a profile article in English, a magazine spread in Design, and a website in Web/Audio. In English we wrote a 5 page profile on a subject of our choosing while maintaining journalistic integrity with a fair profile. In Design we created a 5 page magazine spread with photos of our subjects and design elements to create a visual portrayal of the profile subject. In Web/Audio we created a single page website that represented the subject and displayed the information in a visually pleasing and easy to use way. This was the most interwoven all of our classes have been so far. This interconnectedness meant that I could have an idea for the project and apply that idea to every aspect of the project from essay to website.

My profile subject was working mothers. More specifically, primary breadwinning mother. I interviewed 3 different working mothers, all in different fields and the father of their children have differnt roles. This variety allowed me to accurately profile working mothers as a whole rather than, for example, working mothers in technology.

Magazine

This is the magazine article I wrote and designed when profiling primary bread-winning working mothers. Personally, I most enjoyed interviewing the three working mothers. Designing the magazine spread and learning how to use graphic design elements to add depth and character to the spread was interesting. Writing the article encouraged me to more deeply reflect on the commonalities between the women and was extremely thought provoking. However, the interview process had a pull that I was not expecting. I had never created a project like this before so I had to learn all of the necessary skills to produce the idea I had in my head to the computer. I tried to create a magazine spread that was professional and respectful to the mothers I interviewed. They were willing to open up about their personal lives and share private stories with me and with that I felt a responsibility to produce a spread that acurately represented the interviewees.
