Projects

For our last project at Freestyle, we were given an open ended assignment of choosing a skill we wanted to develop. Whether we created a product from this skill was optional. Before learning that an infographic was going to be required in English, I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I had had a bit of experience with infographics in the past and knew it was an area that I wanted to explore further. Initially I wanted to make all my infographics about magical realism which is a subgenre of fiction. I wanted to read four different magical realism novels and make four separate infographics pertaining to them using four different mediums.I quickly realized that I was biting off more than I could choose. The reading along would have taken at least 3 weeks and I didn’t have that sort of time with the craze of finals happening. When conferencing with Mr. Florendo about my project, he came up with the idea to use other subjects from school as the content for my infographics. My AP Environmental Science class immediately came to mind.

For my first infographic I used the online application Piktochart. The content of this was different information regarding forests. This was not only great for my project, but also good studying for my APES final. Some things I found surprising were that I found myself thinking that some of the liberties that the application had taken to make graphic design more user friendly tedious considering I’m usually familiar with more professional tools. What I did like about Piktochart was that it had a lot of preset images and icons along with a really easy way to make charts. Below I have a picture of the application’s interface.

For my second infographic I used the online application Canva. This time the content was based on our water unit in APES. This time I used less text and more graphics which made it more infographic like. At this point I began getting frustrated with the applications. I found that they were making it harder to get what I really wanted.

For my last infographic I decided to use Photoshop and Illustrator. This one was about general APES and was basically my study guide for the final. I'm really happy with how this turned out. I feel like I was able to put my own personal spin on the whole infographic thing.

Above is a picture of me working on my project.

My music was made on reason.

My first year of Freestyle has been a really great experience. I know that it’s one that I’m going to reflect on for the rest of my life. I think something that’s been really different about Freestyle is that I feel that I’m actually going to be using these skills that I’ve learned here in the future.
