Introducing Dr. Debra Matityahu

Welcome to my Profile website! This website contains a profile of Dr. Debra Matityahu, who is the founder of a nonprofit organization that aids women in Eldoret, Kenya who have suffered from a fistula, or severe child birth injury. This organization not only offers these incredible women surgery, but vocational training or education too. Thanks to Debra, this tragedy may be globally abolished. Debra intially caught my eye when she became the proud recipient of, "The Bay Area's Women of Influence Award" in 2013. The prestige from this organization in addition to being a gynecologist, a mother, and an athlete has culminated to make her an especially fascinating individual.

On this website, you will have access to the magazine article that I produced in my Design class (complete with the text from my paper in English class), a photogallery that I compiled in Web/Audio and my final presentation which serves as the showcase for all aspects of the profile unit. Additionally, we were asked to create a commercial in Web/Audio for our star individual, which can be found below. This was my first attempt at utlizing Adobe After Effects, and it has allowed me to create a new form of digital art that is unlike anything else I've created thus far at Freestyle.

After completing the Profile unit, I have definitely gained a greater appreciation for world in which I live and all the opportunities I have access to. This project has truly opened my eyes to some of the imperfections of the world and has only heightened my respect for my profile star, Dr. Debra Matityahu.

I would like to thank all my interviewees for their time and thoughtful responses and most importantly my Profile star, Dr. Debra Matityahu.

Magazine

The magazine article is a culmination of multiple aspects of this unit. Not only does the article include original text from my English paper, but it also features my unique graphic design elements. This magazine article was created in Adobe InDesign; providing me with a second opportunity to work with this application (the first time being the junior documentary). I had an easier time managing InDesign this time around, however I tried to push myself to implement more advanced techniques, such as leading, tracking, and kerning in my text.

The graphic design elements that are most prevelent in my magazine article are circles. I wanted to symbolize the cirlcular journey these women go through, while emphasizing their trek from start to finish, which is clear by the wavy line that follows you through my article.

Coming up with graphic design elements was definitely the most difficult part of the making the article, as I wasn't sure what Ieven wanted to depict. I changed my color scheme multiple times throughout this process and therefore had to come up with several different layouts and designs until I found one in which I was satisfied. I also struggled with the message I wanted to send to myaudience. I had to balance communicating the severity of Debra's organization while keeping it empowering and optimistic as well. This again ties back to my struggle with choosing colors. In the end, I am so proud of what I've been able to accomplish in creating this magazine article. Presentation

The purpose of the presentation was to not only to present the key ideas of our research project, but it was to communicate how we've grown from this experience, what we've learned, and what challenges we've faced in tackling the profile unit. The presentaion was mainly created in Design, using Google Presentation. To sustain the theme of unity, we incorporated many of the same colors, fonts, and graphic design elements into the presentation too. We were able to communicate to our teachers and peers what the profile process was really like, as the final products are not always a clear representation of our journey.
