Showcase

Hello, I am Ryan Kelleher and I am a Film student at Freestyle Academy. Through the programs at Freestyle I have had the opportunity to explore my passions for filmmaking, acting, and editing. When I am not doing work for school I enjoy spending my time playing with my dog, playing dodgeball with my friends, playing various video games, and watching TV shows like “Brooklyn Nine Nine.”

For My Senior Showcase I am proud to present my Senior Narrative and the different video productions that I have acted in. These represent what I believe are the greatest of my moments at Freestyle. My role in the project was shooting all of the camera moving sequences, editing certain scenes, and the effects in the later half of the short film. Through running camera I learned how to keep a steady hand while making sure the film was in focus and how to map out my path to not crash into anything while I was backing up. While editing I learned the basics of how to pace a scene, and I learned how to mash effects to create something unique. For the productions that I acted in I wanted to showcase my ability to put myself in another person’s shoes. One thing that I really wanted to try out but didn’t have the opportunity to do was experiment with accents because they fascinate me and whenever I hear one, I try to replicate it.

I would love to hear your feedback. Did the effects and mashing of different clips help put you in the mind of the character? Were the cuts and effects matching the scene? Was the character I was portraying convincing? Could you feel the tension between the characters?

Next Year I am planning on studying at Humboldt State University. I chose to be an Undeclared major because I don’t believe that I have explored enough of the different majors and enough of myself to know what I want to study yet. I am excited to experience the beautiful landscape of Humboldt and test the different areas of study the university offers.

The first project that I wanted to showcase is my Senior Narrative. For this project we were given four months to create an original story, shot it, and edit it. I was working with another first year film student, which meant that our project would be a film with no dialog. We decided to do a story about a janitor who goes crazy from the pills he is taking. My main role in the project was to do most of the special effects, and my partners main role was doing the sound, the rest we both worked on together. Something specific that I would like feedback on is the last minute (roughly 4:50-5-50) of the film where the effects really ramp up.

Below are screen shots of the some of the files used in the making of this film.

The other project that I wanted to showcase was a Senior Narrative film that I acted in. This Senior Narrative was being directed by two second year film students, so their narrative included dialog. I wanted to include this because I am very proud of how I acted in the film. Acting has always interested me, but I have never really been able to explore it until I came to freestyle.

This was the largest film that I acted in and it was amazing. I had a ton of fun filming the scenes, and I really got a taste of what acting is really like. I never really thought about how many times you have to repeat the same lines in the same way to get multiple angles of a shot. I also learned a lot about the amount of people that are on set just helping the shot go smoothly. Some specific feedback that I would like to be given is, could you feel the emotion in the scene?

Here is a short that I wrote, directed, and acted in. This was for my Zenith project where I wanted to try my hand at comedy sketches.
