This unit was all about learning how to use narrative techniques to tell a successful and compelling story. We learned how to harness dialogue, visuals, plot building, character arcs, and more for storytelling, which we applied to our projects.
In English, we read the Parable of the Sower, which taught us about how social and political commentary can be weaved into a story in order to give it real-world weight and significance.
After that, we chose our own real-world issues that were important to us, and wrote an argument essay about it. My research essay was about the treatment of essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, and what it can tell us about how to improve the workforce today.
Our last project in English this unit was the Wordbuilding Narrative Project. Over the course of the project, we learned how to collaborate with others in order to create a cohesive story, including compelling plot, characters, settings, and visuals.
In Digital Media, we started with the Surrealism Project. We focused on photobashing images together to create a finished piece with a surreal, dreamlike visual style.
After that, we focused on various outputs from our Multilayered 3D Art project. I chose a lightbox for my project. First, we sketched out our idea, making sure to take into account the layers. Second, we learned to create files in Illustrator that could be read by the laser cutter. Third, we assembled it all into our final 3D artwork. Once we had the final product, we combined all the evidence of the process into one video. We also used our illustrator file to create a video showing the layers in 3D space in After Effects.
In Animation, we learned to add motion and expressions to our characters. We started with creating walk, run, and jump cycles. After that, we learned to do expressions and lip sync. Last but definitely not least, we formed groups and created a short narrative animation together.
