The haiku project began in English when we were to draw a feeling or emotion and an action out of a hat. Thes two sentence fragment became our concept statement and baseline for our haikus. Our first assignment was to write a haiku Poem that properly conveyed each of our concept statements. After a few drafts of the haiku, we were then instructed to put it over a photo which metaphorically represented and conveyed the feeling of our haiku.

Our next assignment was to create a Video version of our haiku. We were to record us saying our haikus and then use Adobe Premiere Pro to edit and assemble a video that also accurately conveyed our concept statement. After recording our haikus we chose music, imported our photo, and added text and special effect until we achieved our desired look and sound.

My Concept Statement

I am exploring the feeling of defeat through the action of preserving memories.

Since the goal of my haiku was to portray this concept statement, I decided to write about the lack of memory. In my poem, I focused on the feeling of defeat that comes with the inability to remember something that is important to you. I used a beach on a cold, cloudy day as a metaphor for the mind. I wrote about how the fog and clouds do not allow one to see the view that I want to, and metaphorically how one cannot remember things from very long ago that they want to. In the last line, I wrote about horizons of thought as a metaphor of idea versus memories. This is supposed to connect to how when one forgets something we try to compensate by formulating an answer or solution that makes sense or satisfies the situation using ideas instead of memories.

Below you will find a snapshot of my workspace in Adobe Premiere Pro and my final version of my Photo Video Haiku titled “Defeated Memories.”
