Podcast

Introduction:

The purpose of this unit was to learn to creatively express an idea through an uncommon medium. We were able to choose a topic we felt interested in and express our thoughts or the thoughts of others. In our podcast we examined homelessness in San Francisco. Homelessness has always been stigmatized as a blight upon a city and an issue resulting for their own choices. Today, we re-examine this belief and attempt to change minds about the homeless situation in San Francisco, California.

Bios:

Sean Li is a senior at Los Altos High School, studying anatomy, background designs, and electrical engineering. Being an active member of the GSA, Sean believes in equality for everyone regardless of race, gender, sexual identity, or otherwise. He hopes to enter UCSB majoring in electrical engineering with a minor in anthropology. With awards, achievements, and 3 years of hard-earned knowledge about the Chinese language, Sean hopes to change the industrial situation in China in order to better one of the most populated countries in the world.

Trevor Prunty, an active member of the GSA, has lived in the City for most of his life. Growing up in Hayward, the Excelsior, and Pacifica, Trevor understands the many flaws and beauties of San Francisco and its many districts. He aims to major in urban planning because he grew up in an urban and suburban environment and hopes to learn more about both in order to understand their environments and how to improve upon them. He’s a man of the city, by the city, and for the city, advocating for some of the problems plaguing San Francisco such as homelessness, pollution, and poor urban planning.

Process:

The creation of this podcast was difficult after facing many problems along the way. The first problem we faced was that in the middle of the podcast, another group walked in on our first take, so we had to redo that particular section of the podcast. However, the sound of their podcast could be heard during our podcast, so we had to speak louder in order to counteract their volume. Additionally, some of the audio clips had to be redone because of personal choices, so some audio sounded disjointed and different from the original.

Reflection:

This unit was a unique opportunity to express a controversial opinion through an uncommon medium. We were able to spark a debate about a problem currently affecting San Francisco, while able to offer two opposing opinions that attempted to find a common solution rather than attacking either side.
