Sofia Biros

Hi! My name's Sofia, and I’m a senior at Freestyle Academy of Arts and Technology, based in Mountain View, California. Instead of learning everything from all our different classes in separate learning environments, here at Freestyle, everything we learn in design, Web production/audio engineering and English overlap and connect with each other.

On this website, you'll find all my different projects from my two years at Freestyle. Our 8 different projects (4 from junior year, 4 from senior year) are listed on the left. These projects all have their own webpage, where you can find all my content for individual project. This content ranges from essays, poems and short stories to photography, animations and music.

To create this webpage, along with the 8 main project pages, I used Adobe Dreamweaver. To edit all of my photos and most of the other graphics used throughout the sites, I used Adobe Photoshop. I also use Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Lightroom. In addition, I use Adobe Flash to create animations, and Pro Tools and Reason to create music. Before coming to Freestyle, I had no prior experience with the Adobe Creative suite or any of the other programs we use. Although I struggled at first, I soon picked up on the nuances of the applications and used them to my advantage.

Make sure to click on the different links to access the individual project pages.

Self Portrait

This website was created in order to help answer the question “Who am I?” At first, I was overwhelmed and I couldn’t begin to fathom how I could express myself to the outside world in only a few short web pages. This feeling subsided however, as all the pieces of this project started coming together. Since all of the courses at Freestyle are interwoven, so is this website. Certain pieces, such as the essay, podcast, and my poems were written in my English class. These pieces were then supplemented with visual and oral aids that I created in my Design class and in my WebAudio.

To create this website, I used HTML and CSS in Adobe Dreamweaver. To make the buttons, along with all of the photos and graphics such as the illustration and diptych, I used both Photoshop and Illustrator. To view many of these images larger and in a new pop up window, simply click on the image. For media such as the mp3 music files, podcasts, and videos, I used Garageband. If you click on the “play” buttons throughout the site, you can hear all of these files.

This website, being the very first one I ever created, was definitely difficult for me to make. Especially at the beginning, I struggled with the learning curve of Dreamweaver in particular. By the end of making this site, however, I felt more confident in my skills and couldn’t wait to build my next site.

Narrative 1

This website is based on our second unit here at Freestyle, Narrative. The purpose of this project was to answer the question, “How well can I visually tell a story?” In this unit, we wrote short stories in English, adapting them to longer ones. My primary story, “Harlin,” influenced all the material on this site. I then made the story into a graphic novel, which was then turned into an animatic (a rough version of an animation), and then of course, the animation version. I photographed a real life version of main character of my story. I used Photoshop to edit this picture, creating a kind of surreal effect. Lastly, everything was compiled into this website using Dreamweaver.

This project was very interesting to me. I enjoyed using many of the programs, but I found Adobe Flash CS6 the most difficult. It was hard to translate my ideas from my head to paper to the computer, especially given the short time crunch. Overall, I like my work a lot, but I know that if I was given more time I could definitely do even better work.

Documentary

This is my third project here at Freestyle Academy, produced in the Spring of 2014. This project started as a research based essay in English. The assignment was to find the “untold stories” of our communities. I based my project on Book Buyers of Mountain View.

After writing an essay including research and interviews, we designed a printed book using this essay and our own original photos. You can read the essay under the “paper” tab and view the book under the “book” tab.

Lastly, we brought everything together in Web/Audio. Using the copy from my essay and the design from my book, I designed a transcript to follow while reading parts of my essay. I recorded this and edited in recordings from the interviews I had conducted. To listen to this while viewing accompanying photos, click the “slideshow” tab.

This was the most difficult project I have done at Freestyle, but it was also the most rewarding. I learned lots about local business and why it is important, and I also fine tuned the skills I have been learning all year. Programs I used include Adobe InDesign, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and Illustrator, and Pro Tools.

Experimental

This is our 4th and final project of our junior year here at Freestyle. The main question revolving around this unit was “How do I use unconventional forms to express myself?” In this unit, we experimented with different art mediums, computer programs, and literature, such as poetry. This unit was intended to help us develop our abstract thinking and communication skills, using unconventional forms to express ideas. We pulled words out of a hat to create our unique main ideas. For this project, I explored the feeling of hatred resulting from destruction. Everything in this unit revolves around this phrase.

Overall, this unit was incredibly fun. I was able to break out of my comfort zone and find new ways to express myself.

Profile

Welcome to the profile project, the first project of my senior year at Freestyle. This project is our equivalent of a senior thesis. My English, Design, and Web/Audio classes all had their own individual assignments, but all were incorporated together. I am proud of the work I was able to produce. Like all projects at Freestyle, this was an extremely rewarding experience. I believe I learned a lot about both myself and working with others during the span of this project. I was able to practice my writing skills, design techniques, and various computer programs, such as Dreamweaver, After Effects, and InDesign, all while in an academic setting, something unique to Freestyle.
