Composition

For the digital media weekly photo challenge, one type of photo is a composition photo. We’re asked to take photos that have certain techniques used to create a good composition.

    Depth of Field and Perspective

I struggled with this photo a lot, I had trouble setting it up and taking it. Eventually I got this, which I really enjoyed. My dog, Koda, looks just a little afraid of this “giant” tennis ball, which I find extremely amusing.

    Viewpoint

This is the bird’s eye view. I took this in New Zealand from the tallest building in Aukland. I decided to change the color to make it how a bird sees things as well. Birds see far more color than people, and see UV as well. Though it isn’t as pretty, birds see things in far higher saturation. I think it’s cool to take a point of view and make it more realistic.

    Color Theory

This is a photo of my brother skipping stones at the blue pools in New Zealand. The original photo is a lot more yellow and generally warmer, so I made the photo a lot more blue and upped the contrast. I liked the action shot, I thought it made it feel more like a still from a movie. I also cropped out the bridge that used to be in it with a lot of people, so it feels more lonely and interesting.

    Rule of Odds

I found this shot organically while hanging out with my sister and parents. My sister plopped herself between them, and I realized it was a rule of odds with my sister in the middle and parents on each side providing a frame around her. It isn’t a perfect shot, but it was cool how it just magically came up in real life.

    Rule of Thirds

I love my dog, and I love having him in photos. When we had a rule of thirds challenge, I knew I wanted him in it. Koda loves to laze about outside, usually when there’s sunshine, but he followed me outside for a nap when I was taking some photos. I love how expressive his face is. Slightly sad, kind of bored, almost like he wished it was sunnier or that I would stop taking pictures so we can go inside. Using the rule of thirds, I pushed him to the extreme edge of the photo, making him look a lot more tired and emphasizing his more negative face, squishing…

    Lighting

For this photo challenge, we were given a speed light and told to use it creatively. I knew I wanted to do something in the dark, so I went into my bathroom and messed around with the light and camera. I noticed that the light caused the water on the mirror to become highly visible, and I liked the creepy feeling of the dark bathroom suddenly being lit up, like there might be a monster there for a split second.

    Symmetry

This photo was an experiment in symmetry. Using photoshop, I took a picture of my face and reflected it on both sides, creating a perfectly symmetrical pictures of my right and left halves. The difference between the sides of my face are made clear in the photos, and personally I find it creepy but fascinating to look at.
