PSA Project

For this project we got into groups of 4 and had to create a Public Service Announcement for an actual, real world client. My group consisted of Scott S, Michael S, and Kate E. That's three web students and one film student. Our goal was to create 4 posters, a website, 4 radio spots, a television spot, and 4 persuasive essays. Everyone in the group had to create a poster and write their own persuasive essay. We all wrote 2 radio spot scripts, and picked the 4 best out of those to record. The film students (Kate, in this case) were required to make the tv spot, and the web students had to create the website and edit the radio spot recordings.

Our client for this project was JustREAD, which is an amazing literacy program for high school students who can't read. The target audience for this campaign was potential volunteers or donors, in order to help promote JustREAD and allow it to create more centers and hire more tutors. The main message we used in the campaign was how JustREAD has the ability to turn students' lives around, and helping out the program could change someone's life.

In the radio ads, we focused on the consequences of a life with illiteracy. The desired effect was to reach the audience and touch them emotionally, hopefully creating an urge to volunteer as a part of their social responsibility. When it came to the posters, we emphasized the future effect that JustREAD has on it's students. We used pictures of a diploma, money, job application, and a college acceptance letter to show that JustREAD gives their students the ability to achieve this level of success. The film focused on the doors that being literate opens up for their students, like the poster ads.

Our color scheme was that of light green and yellow. We chose these colors for our campaign because we felt that the colors kept an optimistic mood in the campaign and effectively symbolized stimulation and growth. The typography was Myriad on the posters and Helevetica on the website. We chose these because they weren't flashy, were easy to read, and had a good, clean look to them.

Personally, I am most proud of our poster campaign. I really think they link together very well, and the colors just look great. The photos themselves are also great. I also really like them because in order achieve the clear white background that we used we had to learn a new function in Photoshop, which was pretty cool to me.
