Leap for Reality

title of dyptich

My illustration is a portrayal of my narrative diptych, which depicts the story of a boy whose parents tell him to watch the pot of oil on the stove while they are going out to get groceries. Instead of keeping a close eye on the stove, the boy decides to watch television, only to feed his laziness. While watching television, the pot overheats, and explodes, setting the house ablaze, giving the boy only minutes to escape the house. In my illustration, I depicted this by portraying a silhouette of a boy reaching out of a television, for a burning tree surrounded by wilting grass. The tree itself is very simplistic, while the shadow of tree contains myriads of intricate branches. In the very top of the illustration is the moon, shining light upon the entire scene.

In the illustration, I chose to many neutral colors, like brown and grey, to color many of the symbols. I chose to make the silhouette of the boy look like a shadow, and reaching out from the television, because after watching so television, he began to lose touch with reality. By the time the boy was roughly snapped back into reality by the burning house. he had lost his home. I chose to make the shadow have a great deal more branches than the standing tree, because the tree symbolizes his home, and because of his actions, is a shadow of its former self, set ablaze and demolished. The bright reds and oranges of the flame give a sense of violence and destruction, which engulfs the tree, leading to its demise. The grass too, has a feeling of death too it, which gives the scene a sense of despair. Written on the side of the television, is the word “laziness”, which shows tells the viewer the reason for his predicament. In total, the illustration gives the viewer sense of loss and depression.
