For this unit we studied the power of a short story. We read several authors works to understand how to quickly draw in the reader, develop a character and create an impact. I chose to write about something relate able to everyone. I tired to capture the emotions and thoughts going through the minds of the characters as this awkward moment was unfolding.

High School Never Ends

OMG, look there’s Becky, damn she’s fine. Too bad she will never notice me, and thinks I’m a loser. Look at those long legs walking towards me. Wait, is she waiving at me? I think she is! Should I wave back? I guess I will.

“Hey Becky!” I yell as I wave back.

When she doesn’t wave back, I turn around to see where she’s headed, to learn that she was actually waving to Johnny Thompson. My stomach drops, I feel my face start to blush and wish I could run away. She gives me an awkward smile and keeps going.

WOW! I look so stupid! She thought I was a loser before, but now she must really think I’m pathetic. Also, to make it even worse Johnny is laughing at me in front of everyone. I hate Johnny so much. He’s such a dick! I drop my head in shame and walk away wishing to never see them again.

Thirty seconds earlier, Becky walked out of the bathroom and thought; Where is everyone? Are they out yet? I hate standing alone. OH thank goodness! Look there’s Johnny. Does he see me? I will wave to get his attention.

As I wave to Johnny, the Henry responds with a wave and yell. Oh no, this is awkward. What should I do? I think. Now I feel bad, especially because Johnny is laughing. He can be such a jerk.  What should I do? Smile back? Wave back?

I smile back sheepishly, seeing the red on his cheeks. I hate those awkward moments. Maybe I should go talk to him? No, I have never really talked to him before and I would feel embarrassed. OH NO! I am going to be late to pick up the kids from school. I better run.

“Hey Johnny, tell the boss I’ll be at the office a little late tomorrow.”
