book cover Here is a link to my book, titled "Breaking the Ice". For my documentary topic, I chose to study my mom and her curling team, who has both deaf and hearing players. I wanted to figure out how hearing people with minimal sign language skills could communicate and work with deaf people, and vice versa. I interviewed Gabrielle, an experienced hearing curler on the team, as well as my mother and JoDee, the two deaf players. I went to several games and practices and observed the way the women communicated and functioned despite the communication barrier. I have spent my whole life around deaf culture, and never understood the separation between hearing and deaf people because I'm so used to communicating in sign language. I created this book in hopes of convincing hearing people of how easy it is to communicate with deaf people. I hope you enjoy what I've produced!

Here is a picture of Adobe's InDesign application, which I used to create this book. Compared to the other Adobe programs I've used this year, this one is much more detailed and complex. However, once you get the hang of it, it's really enjoyable to watch your essays and images come to life in the form of a book!
