This Quarter, students worked on many projects in English, Design, and Digital Media.

Citizen Unit

For our first project in English, we read the book “Citizen: An American Lyric” by Claudia Rankine, a book that uses poetry, research, and essay-style writing to talk about everyday racism that African-Americans face in America. Through this book we learned about aspects such as microaggressions, which are “everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, which communicate …derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based solely upon their marginalized group membership”, as well as learned about invisibility and hyper-visibility problems. In response, we were asked to interview someone else’s identity and how they may face one of these problems. I decided to interview a young Swedish woman who talked about her invisibility issue. More specifically, she explained how she is always stereotyped and pre-judged as American “white-girl” and how her own culture is continuously eclipsed by these pre-judgements.

The next part of the Citizen Unit took place in Design, where we used Street Photography to help capture the essence of our lyrical essays. We then created a diptych, which is, in essence, a two panel art piece. Here is my artwork below:
