For my self-portrait diptych I drew from the self-portrait essay I wrote in my Freestyle English class. The essay first describes my frustrations with the imperfections of writing, in its inability to perfectly carry an idea in its entirety, but then relates the beauty that this gives it, and the necessity of its imperfections to create something beautiful. These two sentiments are represented in the two photos of my diptych.
The first photo is of a half-written essay in a typewriter in low lighting. The typewriter, a notoriously frustrating device, represents the frustration I experience in writing. The typed and crossed out words show the strive for perfection, which is impossible.
The second photo is of the beach at sunset. While not flawless, to me it is the relative perfect shot of that moment. It represents the potential beauty in writing through the frustration.
