Diptych

Out Into the Open

A Diptych is where you put two distinct and unique images together that metaphorically go together in order to represent a message.

In Design, we were asked to create a diptych that helps represent who we are as a person. We used DSLR cameras to take our photos, then used Adobe photoshop to put up our pictures and construct our diptych. My diptych is used to portray the part of me who yearns to explore the world, and gain new experiences.

The creation of my diptych was inspired by two lines of my poem “Walking is a Cathartic Way of Mapping.” Walking is a stress reliever for me and whenever I go out to walk I somehow always learn something new about myself through the places I go. The two pictures of my piece come together in an effort to communicate the feelings and inner workings of my thoughts as I walk. For the left side of my diptych, I took a picture of a tunnel to represent the line “Greedily I look to find a mouse hole.” This line is meant to convey my need of escaping confinement in order to experience the real world. To show this, I photographed the tunnel starting out in darkness eventually ending in light, which I also accomplished by creating a deep depth of field.

The line “the dashes begin to form, as ripples do after droplets fall into still waters,” influenced the idea of taking a picture of vines, which is used for the right side of my diptych. This image is meant to express how the experiences you have become but another part of you. I took a shot that with lots of intertwined parts of the vine coming from the roots, which shows how one idea in your head can spread out into several. This also allowed me to get the perfect contrast between the light and shadows giving depth to the image revealing that the occurrences in your life will always stay with you no matter what.
