Early Development

Once I had the skeleton of my game I began to flush out the cards. No longer where they blank pieces of paper! They were now pieces of paper with crappy sketches on them. I had a total of 13 original cards. Once I photocopied the originals I had a total of 24 movement cards and 18 attack cards.

Now that the cards were ready I 3D printed some plastic ships for each player. Unfortunately this original design was flawed in that it had no base. The ships would fall over constantly over the course of a game. This was a problem that I fixed later with a completely new design.

After several playtests with various new players, I began to feel more confident in my game. I worked on creating a real board for the players to sail on. The blank 12×12 grid was starting to feel extremely dull. I used Photoshop to create an image that looked like water thanks to a tutorial, and placed the grid over that image. My Design teacher helped me print out the board on glossy adhesive paper. To make the board more sturdy I wrapped a piece of bookboard in some Vinyl backing paper and slapped the print on top. The result is the board I am using today!
