Holding on

“What did I get myself into? Now I have a guy at my door picking me up. I made him drop all his grocery bags yesterday but did he deserve this in return?” David stepped up to the door bringing his hand to the doorbell. Right then I realized the picture frame of Jessie was still on display in my one bath and one room apartment. I quickly hid it under the couch blanket where Jessie and I used to sit on. "Hello, wow you look beautiful,” he said to me. "Thanks" I said as I walked up to his car and slowly reached for the door handle. My back pressed firmly ageist the seat as the car started to move forward as we headed for the carnival.

When we arrived I stayed sitting down staring in front of me, all of a sudden he opened my car door. I stepped out and all of the hairs on my arms stood up. I looked around and saw people screaming on the rides. I continued to let my eyes wonder and then I saw those bright lights in the sky. Jessie would have said those stars form the image of waves of an ocean and I could of then said that I see many hearts. Lying down in the grass late at night that’s what we used to do. “Hey… hello… Amanda what would you like to do first?” he asked trying to get my attention. “Oh… let’s go pop balloons with arrows” I replied. We walked up to the stand with that game. David handed five dollars to the guy taking care of the game. I received the arrows and started throwing them but I couldn’t pop the balloons I wanted. A soft warm surface rested on my shoulders and wrapped around me. There was all these butterflies in my stomach for a split second I truly believed it could have been Jessie behind me. I looked over my shoulder and saw David take my hand with the arrow in it and whispering in my ear “you have this all you need to do is believe you can do it just throw it fast.” I tried it and it worked! I turned around gazed him in the eye and smiled. I received a big teddy bear from the guy at the stand. “Good job!” David said then he took my hand and pulled me in closer to him. “Look at the stars they are beautiful just like you.” With those words in my head I slightly pushed him so he would let go of me and I started walking away. He quickly followed after me and said “is everything ok?” He had to wait a very long time for my answer but finally I hesitantly responded “Well yes… Can you please take me home now?” He nicely said “sure whatever you need Amanda.”

As we walked up to my front door he gave me a hug felt like it lasted for hours I realized he was really into me and didn’t want to leave. He said "I had a really good time with you tonight and I don't want to leave you" I smiled for just a while but then gently pushed him away and opened my front door. He took my hand and pulled me in his arms. Then he lifted up my chin and gave me the sweetest kiss. When I saw that big smile on face I felt obliged to tell him to come in. “Why don’t you come in, well that’s if you want to” I told him. We went inside the house I asked “would you like something to drink?” “Yes some coffee please” “Ok I’ll go make some coffee for us just make yourself at home.” When I went to the living room to give him his coffee I saw the frame with the glass shattered. “I’m so sorry when I sat down on the couch I broke it. I froze and shouted “give it to me!” I rapidly went to grab the torn picture of Jessie. “Who’s this?” he said. “You don’t need to know!” “I’m sorry I really didn’t mean to break this and sorry for asking who it was... hey why are you crying Amanda? Is it something else? We can always talk about it I’ll be here for you if you need me.“ I stood in the middle of the living room speechless for quite some time but then finally opened my mouth and said one word, “leave.” “Amanda I have no idea what’s going on but I respect your wish I’ll leave. Remember that I like you and will always be here if you need anything” He turned around and opened the front door looking back to tell me “Good night and take care call whenever you need me.”
Looking through the window I saw him get in the car and drive away. Asking myself so many questions like where will David and I go in the future? How will I be able to tell David who the guy in the frame is? Or most importantly what if David disappears just like my dead husband Jessie did?
