The short story that I wrote for my animation is called “Edgar.” It is about a lonely, Boogeyman Drawingugly monster named Edgar who gets a make-over to fit in with the others. He soon realizes however that he doesn’t need the approval of others to be happy with himself and lives happily ever after. My inspiration for this story was a cartoon I saw in a drawing book. The monster just looked really weird in a sort of cute way and I started thinking about how he must have a hard time fitting in with all the Draculas and Caspers out there. It's like that movie "Mean Girls" but with animated monsters...

Edgar

Once upon a time there lived a little monster named Edgar.
Edgar wasn't a scary monster, he didn't hide in closets, spook little children, or haunt houses, in fact, he did quite the opposite. You see, Edgar wasn't scary-looking in the sense that he instilled fear into the hearts of everyone who saw him but scary-looking in the sense that he was so ugly it was almost laughable.
He could never scare children and give them nightmares because he was so funny-looking and for that reason the other monsters didn't associate themselves with him.
It was just too embarrassing.
So Edgar was never invited to tag along or hang with the others, forced to live a lonely existence in his little dirt hovel. In his house he would just cry himself to sleep every night and feel like an idiot because he wasn't inspiring any nightmares or bed-wetting.
One day though Edgar was watching some late night TV, sitting on his couch, and eating leftovers. And as he was just shoveling the last bit of food into his ugly mouth a commercial came on the TV for SpookCity's Halloween Store Sale! That gave Edgar an idea. If he could makeover his image and become scary then the other monsters would surely let him hang out with them!
So Edgar immediately flew out the door and went to SpookCity to start his transformation!
Once there though, he realized that he needed some help. He had no idea where to start! What made a monster scary anyway?
Luckily for him there was a very scary-looking store employee who looked like she knew what she was doing.
So shyly, Edgar approached her (she was just SO scary!), tapped her on the shoulder, and asked for her help.
The scary monster was happy to oblige and started giving fake teeth, blood, warts, and masks to Edgar.
"This will make you super duper scary!" She squealed. "You'll be soooo frightening!"
He just smiled awkwardly at her.
Later that day, the scary-looking monster took Edgar to hang out with the other monsters.
Edgar felt very self-conscious though. He didn't feel like himself.
But when he got to the gathering all the other monsters screamed...in fright!
Edgar was so overjoyed and spent the rest of the night partying with all the other monsters.
But then something came to him, why was he happy to be accepted by these terrible monsters who were so shallow? Why did he want to be their friends?
Edgar frowned to himself, annoyed at his own stupidity.
Why was he doing this at all?
In a sudden fit of anger, Edgar stomped away, leaving the other monsters shocked and surprised.
Edgar flew home, crying all the way to his dirt hovel, but when he got to the door, someone tapped him on the shoulder.
It was the scary-looking store employee!
And to Edgar's amazement she gave him a big, fat kiss and then flew away.
Edgar then proceeded to die of happiness.

The End.
