HALLOWEEN WEEK!!!!!!!!

OMG, it's one of the most fun and screwed up holidays of the year. It's history is what I find to be disturbing and another example of how the past was a little bit dim with the lighing if you know what I mean. In fact the spirit of halloween is still here today.

If you did your research correctly, Halloween is just day 1 of a three day celebration. Starting off with the Celtics, it was believe that on the last day of the year (which to them was oct. 31st) ghosts and spirits would return to Earth and cause a little chaos. Now get this, while wearing the heads and skins of animals, people would sacrifice their crops and livestock so that spirits would leave them alone. After 43 years of this, the Romans decided to knock some sense into their heads by taking over their land (Ireland today). However, this would not help because the Romans dedicated a day late in Oct. to celebrate the dead. In the 800s, where christianity had an influence in Ireland, Pope Boniface VI decided to dedicate Nov. 1st a day to celebrate the saints and martyrs (it was called ALL Saints day). The day before Nov. 1st was called ALL Hallowmas; the night was refered to as ALL Hallows eve. In AD. 1000, the church would make Nov. 2nd All Souls' day, a day to honor the dead. Together, these three days of celebration are called Hallowmas.

Honestly, I'm not into the halloween, oops I mean Hallomas, spirit anymore. Not because of it being too childish ( I mean when are you too young or old to scare the living crap out of anyone?). The reason why is because it is flawed. How is it you ask? I'll gladly tell. First off, I never knew that the next two days were also part of Hallowmas until twelve days after my 18th B-day (check Bio page for B-day). Limited number of people even know about the true history about halloween (but, thanks to me, about 1-2 min. ago, you now know the backround of this celebration). To me, thats like hitting a baseball with a corked bat. You don't know what you are cheering about, but you do it anyway. (Sounds like another holiday to me. Where in the heck do you find rabbit laying eggs in April? I don't know and that is for another opinions week.) Second, since this is a THREE DAY HOLIDAY, shouldn't we expand our celebrations to three days. I know, I know that I'm sort of contradicting myself, but we do have to start of somewhere. Designate Nov. 1st church day, where everyone goes to church sometime during the day and give three prays to God. The prays can be about anything. Nov. 2nd, Mexico has that covered. They have it as the "day of the dead" which is exactly what it is about. The U.S. should join Mexico for the day of the dead.

One last detail that made me laugh. Candy. How did candy get involved in this besides commercialism. Well, you guys remember how the Celtics warded of spirits? I love the fact that we can see children as the spirits. We give them candy so they can have their sugar high at their own house. Kids causing chaos in their own bedrooms, living rooms, parent rooms, kitchens. THE MEANING OF DOMESTIC CHAOS WOULD ACTUALLY LIVE!!!!!!!!!! And of course, when the fun is over, IT'S REALLY OVER. The next thing those poor kids might see is a drill going into the mouth to fill up those cavities. The hallomas spirit only starts of on Oct 31st, but doesn't end until Nov. 2nd.

This is Schaffy signing off.
