diptych

In Design, one of our first assignments was to create a diptych that would display a personal belief or thought. A diptych is when one juxtaposes two contrasting yet related photos to make a statement. We used Canon Rebels to take the photos and Adobe Photoshop to edit them. Enjoy!

"Limitations and the Breakthrough"

"Limitations and the Breakthrough"

One of my personal beliefs is that the turning point of when one can begin to grow is, ironically, that moment in time where one realizes limitations, but refuses to settle for mediocrity. The picture to the left displays the legs of ballerina as she goes en pointe (meaning the very tips of her toes). The stark lighting highlights the strain of leg muscles that the dancer has in this difficult balance, giving the idea of a precarious balance. While I am not a dancer, I have had these moments frequently-- I have reached what I felt to be a barrier, a place in which I had felt that I could do nothing more to go higher--hitting a wall of my own limitations and abilities.
To the right, there is a photo of two people running together, trying to fly a kite. There is an idea of teamwork, of cooperation, and that eventually, the kite will catch a wind and fly. The girl, who holds the reins of the kite, relies on the boy to release it at the last moment. The kite, large and colorful, represents creativity. The kite needs both people’s support to eventually fly, and both people in the photo rely on the other. In this photo, I see myself as the person holding the reins of the kite-- while I try to steer in a certain direction, I ultimately cannot do it without the encouragement of others, and with something to fly with.
