For our first design project at Freestyle, we were assigned a diptych. A diptych is two photos that have been put side by side to create one piece. In this diptych, we were told to portray something about who we are.

Missed Opportunities

Although I’m a very independent and generally positive person, I can’t say that I
know who I would be if I hadn’t found my passion for professional ice hockey four years ago. I’m sure I would still lead a happy and driven in life, but I also think that had I never attended that game, I would have missed out on many great opportunities, and not just in the sense of missing out on the fun.For example, last year, I came to be good friends with a girl who I had met in P.E. freshman year. The reason we became friends was because we were both huge San Jose Sharks fans. Today, she’s one of my closest friends, and I can guarantee that without hockey, I would still hardly know her.

The first half of my diptych represents my life and views before that fateful day
of my first Sharks game in 2006. The girl looks sad and lonely, while the location in
the back seat of the car represents missed opportunities flying by with the scenery
outside. This idea is also emphasized with the use of black and white. The second half
represents my life after finding hockey. The color on the girl symbolizes happiness and
discovery, along with the gesture of leaping into seemingly bland opportunities that are
to be spiced up by trying something new.
