My Web Gems

A Web Gem is a write up of a site that I frequently visit. A link is provided if this site interests you. I'm going to warn you now, however, that I really don't stray from the beaten path of the internet.

http://kubotarestaurant.com/

Kubota is a sushi restaurant in San Jose. I personally really dislike sushi. Nothing repulses me more than raw fish. If it weren't for Kubota's artistically made website, I would not have known how to make the website you are reading this on today. All of us juniors here in Freestyle spent countless hours remaking their website in educational tutorials, to teach us valuable lessons about Dream Weaver. Needless to say, we all got a bit tired of the awkward pink color in the background. However, it's (sort of) thanks to Kubota that my Self Portrait Website and the others to come were able to be produced.

https://www.youtube.com/

Youtube is a website that is helpful in order to find any video you want to watch. From ducks being blown over by the wind to a clip from a cancelled tv show you used to enjoy, Youtube can get you there. One reason I really like using this site is because I don't listen to a lot of the same music as my peers, so when someone tells me about a song, I'd rather listen to the whole thing instead of the 30 second clip provided by iTunes. A music video or some other way of hearing the song can always be found on Youtube.

http://www.pandora.com/

Pandora is a really useful website if you like music. It selects songs based on a suggestion by you, and then makes a station out of it. It's handy because it can expose you to new music in a genre you already like. I know I've definitely found songs that I like based on a Pandora channel. For me, I really like that, because I know that I can get tired of some music on a playlist pretty quickly, and I want something that's similar, but not exactly what I have. It's free, and therefore accessible to anyone who'd like to use it.

Fear the Fin is yet another San Jose Sharks site. This site, however, is a fan-run blog. Though that sounds like a ridiculous way to get information about a professional sports team, this site is actually pretty informative with the bonus of being accurate. They have a lot of good insite about what went on in the previous game, while they also give predictions about upcoming games, down to who will win and who will score (these are rarely accurate, but pretty amusing anyway). Another thing I like about Fear the Fin is that even during the off season, they keep posting random tidbits to keep everyone interested.

ou too. I will be updating once a week to post interesting pages that I like. Enjoy!

Tumblr is a blog site. Much like Facebook, I am on Tumblr every day. However, somehow, I find it more credible than Facebook.

When I joined Tumblr a little over a year ago, I was initially unsure of whether I would really enjoy writtting a blog. I was pretty bad about checking it for quite some time, and posted occasionally when I remembered. However, once I went to Italy this past summer, I realized it was an effective way for me to record what I had done on a particular day, and it was quick and easy (and free!) for my family to see it as well.

There are also lot's of Sharks fans on Tumblr, so it is automatically my kind of place.

Google! Google is one of the worlds most resourceful tools in today's day and age. Who knew ten years ago, that today, one of the most -- if not the most -- used websites would have even become a verb. When someone asks you a question and you don't know the answer, the automatic response is "Google it."

It's quite a handy site, as it gives you access to any website in the entire world. It has also provided the average internet user with handy tools, such as a mapping program, email, a satellite imaging program, and even an internet browser.

http://sjsharks.com

As an avid San Jose Sharks fan, I visit the team website just about every day. I check before games, after games, and even on days when there aren't games. I consider myself to be pretty dedicated, though those who know me would probably say that was an understatement.

I always check up on it for updates on what's happening on non-game days. I check before games to see which goalie they're putting in, and other juicy pregame details. I check after games for player statistics and to see pictures from the game.

I usually enjoy these daily visits, but they aren't quite as enjoyable when the team loses. It can be a little depressing at times, but it's okay.

To some people, this could be extremely boring, but I personally love looking and keeping up with what's going on. Occasionally I decide that I want to find the stats for a game a went to a few years ago (I'm probably the only person who does that...), and because it's such a basic website, that kind of stuff is pretty easy to find.

This website is bookmarked on my computer at home. No joke. GO SHARKS!
